Surf Tour #21
We did it again! After our hugely successful Mozambique Surf Tour in 2014, we returned to Tofo in 2015 for another AWESOME Surf Tour with Unravel Surf Travel !!!
Crossing the border into Mozambique, there’s definitely a change in the air. It’s immediately obvious that you’re in a different place. You’re in Africa.
Travelling to Africa can definitely come as a shock to travellers from more developed parts of the world. There’s a general lawlessness here that can be daunting, but it also creates a sense of freedom…
In Mozambique anything goes. Few things happen as or when they’re supposed to happen. It can be scary for some, and there are obvious risks, like corrupt officials and poverty related crimes, but for the more adventurous traveller this is freedom. Unfettered and unhampered. And sometimes untethered…
Which is why we love the place. In Mozambique it’s easy to experience something completely different. In fact, it’s pretty much guaranteed. If you’ve never been to Africa, then this will be unlike anything you’ve ever experienced before!
A big part of our annual Mozambique Surf Tour is a two day visit to the Kruger National Park, one of the biggest nature reserves on the African continent. Travelling through the Kruger is an awesome way to see all Africa’s biggest animals, in their in the natural environment, from the comfort of our own mini-bus!
And then there’s the surfing part! Tofo is our final destination and that’s where the surfing magic happens! Tofo is ideal for all surfing levels, from complete beginner to super advanced. There are different breaks to suit different levels and it’s one of those places where everyone will be happy regardless of what they’re looking for. Whether it’s fast-paced barrels, friendly foamies, or anything else in between.
And the beaches are absolutely amazing, with endless stretches of white sand, glorious sunsets and crystal-clear warm water.
Other highlights included an ocean safari where we saw dolphins, Humpback and Southern Right whales. Humpback and Southern Wright whales migrate between Mozambique and Antarctica every year. They spend the winter in Mozambique, to give birth, and then travel down to Antarctica for the summer, to feed in the cold nutrient-rich water there.
Mozambique is also one of the best places in the world to swim with Whale Sharks! These gentle giants can be quite shy and sightings aren’t always guaranteed, but we were blessed on our Ocean Safari! We had a great double encounter with a whale-shark and we swam with a manta ray!
Other highlights included a visit to a local village, on a Cultural Tour, and climbing to the top of an old lighthouse, which is usually off limits, but we got permission and gained special access!
We also went a kayak-trip to a nearby lagoon island, partied with the locals and cooked some incredible seafood meals!
And off course we did Yoga on the beach. This is a staple of all our Surf Tours and it’s a great way to relieve tired muscles, worn out from surfing many hours every day…
And then, off course, we surfed some more! And more… We surfed every day and every surf session was paired with a review, in the company of our surf instructors, so as to learn from previous mistakes. Everybody improved their surfing ability and went home with real stoke!
But in the end, all good things come to an end. Finally we had to say our goodbyes. We crossed the border into South Africa and returned to Johannesburg, from where we all went our separate ways… But only until we meet again! Because everybody who’s ever been on a Surf Tour with Unravel Surf Travel knows that once you’ve been with us, you’re part of a big family…
All in all it was another fantastic experience and we’re already looking forward to doing another Mozambique Surf Tour in 2016 !!!
