“Empowering youths in marginalised communities through surfing“
The Surfer Kids was founded in 2010, just outside Mossel Bay, in the Southern Cape of South Africa.
It is a registered non-profit organization and was originally founded as the social outreach arm of Unravel Surf Travel.
The Surfer Kids primary vehicle for empowerment is its Core Surf Program which runs five days a week and accommodates between 35 and 40 children, with a team of 2 full-time and 2 part-time members who support the children at all times.
The aim of the The Surfer Kids’ Core Surf Program is to teach the children advanced surfing skills. This process takes about 3 to 4 years, depending on the child and it serves as a medium through which to teach commitment.
It is the organization’s founding belief that commitment creates empowerment because it enables the full exploitation of any given opportunity.
