Garden Route Surf Trip #32

10 – 24 Mar 2018

After a super-stoked and surfed-out experience with #SurfTrip29 and #SurfTrip30 in late 2017, we took a much needed break and left the Garden Route, before the local crowds that move with the school holidays packed the beaches full. But it never lasts too long and once the calm vibe of our laid-back coastline was restored, we headed into 2018 with #SurfTrip31 and #SurTrip32 lined up and ready to go!!

IMG_20180311_192819_065-01

We started #SurfTrip32 with a drive-through of the spectacular Hemel-en-Aarde Vallei (Valley of Heaven and Earth) to sample some local wines and then headed East, toward the semi-secluded Garden Route and the magic of Buffels Bay. We spent the next 10 days surfing as often as possible, soaking up every moment of surf that Buffels had to offer.

And, as always, we scored some really awesome waves, perfect for learning to surf and progressing further into the line-up!

IMG_20180321_175935_038

We also combined our daily surfing with several excursions and explored all the best adventures the Garden Route has to offer.

And no Garden Route Surf Trip with Unravel Surf Travel would be complete without visiting The Surfer Kids, a non-profit outreach initiative empowering some of the poorest and most marginalized local children through surfing. Guests on #SurfTrip32 had the unique opportunity to assist The Surfer Kids’ Surf Instructors with a day of surf coaching and fun!

As an optional extra we also always offer daily Yoga practice with a qualified instructor on all our Surf Trips, to help relieve tired muscles and focus the mind on enjoying every moment.

Finally we travelled back to Cape Town and finished the trip with an exploration of the breathtaking Cape Peninsula where we visited Cape Point, Boulders Penguin Colony, Kalk Bay Harbour and the world famous Table Mountain.

#SurfTrip32 was an awesome experience and we said goodbye to another super-stoked and surfed-out group of happy clients!

Garden Route Surf Trip #26

After a very busy start to the season, with two big groups on Surf Trip 24 & Surf Trip 25, things slowed down a bit toward the tail end of summer. A smaller group was on the cards for Surf Trip No.26 at the end of February and into March. And it was a welcome change !!! Bigger groups are busy and super fun, but smaller groups allow for tighter twists and turns, fitting into spaces that normally wouldn’t allow for groups at all…

Garden Route Surf Trip #19

Unravel Surf Travel organized and hosted another awesome SURF & Yoga Tour in March 2015 !!!

We were fortunate to receive another incredible group of travelling surfers and surf-enthusiasts, because, while we organize the Tour, ultimately it’s the people who make the Tour.

Jenya Zhivaleva Photography. Your Foto Story

After arrival in Cape Town, we travelled up the Garden Route and based ourselves in the idyllic Buffels Bay, where only a small collection of holiday-beach-houses line numerous quality surf-breaks.

Set in the Goukamma Nature Reserve, Buffels Bay is pristine. It’s protected status not only preserves the beautiful beaches and surrounding nature, but also gives it that unique beach-vibe. The ultimate surfing playground in an unspoilt paradise.

Jenya Zhivaleva Photography. Your Foto Story

Our days in Buffels Bay were centred around surfing, surfing and more surfing, under the expert guidance of our resident Surf Instructors !!!

We spent countless hours in the water, enjoying the un-crowded waves. And when we could surf no more, we enjoyed the serenity of this unique setting, truly the gem of the Garden Route.

Jenya Zhivaleva Photography. Your Foto StoryTo relieve our tired muscles and we practised Yoga with a qualified local Yoga Instructor. Which helped us to spend even more time surfing! Maximizing whatever energy we could harness, to be spent in the ocean.

Jenya Zhivaleva Photography. Your Foto Story

On those days that surfing conditions weren’t ideal we made some time to explore the Garden Route and partake in the finest scenery and adventure this incredible coastline has to offer.

A Safari Game Drive at a beautiful Game Reserve was first on the menu !!!

Jenya Zhivaleva Photography. Your Foto Story

And, speaking of menu’s… Eating GOOD food is obviously a very important requirement to keep hungry surfers going, surfing all day every day !!!

We pride ourselves on the quality food we provide on Surf Tour.

We cater for meat-lovers, vegans and vegetarians, and we’re building a reputation for exceptional quality, taste and variety.

Jenya Zhivaleva Photography. Your Foto Story

Our only requirement is that you eat as much as you need, to power yourself for the next day’s surfing!

Because on Surf Tour with Unravel Surf Travel there’s one thing we make sure of: you surf plenty of the best waves, the finest selection of what’s on offer !!!

Jenya Zhivaleva Photography. Your Foto Story

To add some variety to our board-riding platter, we also tried sand-boarding. And we discovered just how much sand it takes to make the biggest sand dune in South Africa…

Speeding down those dunes were awesome fun !!! … but three days later we were still shaking off the sand… Which, off course, isn’t really a problem if you’re surfing everyday anyway !!!

Jenya Zhivaleva Photography. Your Foto Story

We also visited the world’s highest Bridge Bungee Jump, at the Bloukrans Bridge, where the craziest people in the group got their adrenaline pumping…

… by jumping into the 216m abyss below !!!

bungy surfway

To calm things we down a bit, we mellowed out with unforgettable sunset-drumming sessions on the beach, with a local expert drummer! Drumming to the combined rhythm of our hearts and waves breaking against rocks…

Jenya Zhivaleva Photography. Your Foto Story

And off course, as is customary on every Unravel Surf Travel Tour of the Garden Route, we enjoyed a day of life-enriching-fun with The Surfer Kids NON-Profit, a local Non-Profit organization, supported by Unravel Surf Travel.

The Surfer Kids NON-Profit makes the dream of surfing possible for a group of marginalised, but dedicated, young surfers from a local rural community. A place where few ever have the opportunity to otherwise follow their dreams…

Jenya Zhivaleva Photography. Your Foto Story

We were scheduled to finish the Tour with a visit to Cape Town, to see some of the mother city’s most impressive sights… But before we did, we had one last absolutely incredible surf session…

Jenya Zhivaleva Photography. Your Foto Story

And so we took on the long and winding road to Cape Town, eager to return to the Mother City.

It’s a long drive, but off course, travelling with Unravel Surf Travel, there’s never a dull moment on the road!

Jenya Zhivaleva Photography. Your Foto Story En route to Cape Town we stopped at a wine farm to sample some of the Western Cape’s finest wines. The wine maker took us on a cellar tour and explained all the nuances of harvesting grapes and making good wine. It was a great insight into that delicate process of extracting and balancing tastes.

Jenya Zhivaleva Photography. Your Foto Story

The area is well known for having the ideal climate, perfectly suited to growing vineyards. Some of the world’s finest wines come from this particular wine farm. And to compliment their world class range of wines, the wine farm offers a menu inspired by the love of good food. The perfect companion to the perfect glass of wine!

Jenya Zhivaleva Photography. Your Foto Story

Once in Cape Town we were eager to explore! With the expert guidance of our resident Tour Guide we set off on foot, walking to explore the inner city, sampling some of Cape Town’s notorious sights, as well as her hidden delights…

Jenya Zhivaleva Photography. Your Foto Story It was almost time to say goodbye, but not until we made one final trip, to experience the full extent of the Cape Peninsula’s awesome beauty.

High up on our list of priorities was the Cape of Good Hope, symbolically the southern most tip of Africa, and aesthetically the edge of a great continent!

And it’s easy to see why…

Jenya Zhivaleva Photography. Your Foto Story

We ended the Surf Tour with goodbyes at the airport, but in our hearts and minds we were all still in that happiest of happy places… riding the ultimate wave…

A place where we will always return !!!
