The 6th annual Ross Taylor Surf Contest was held in Buffels Bay, Knysna, South Africa, from the 8th to the 10th of August 2014.
This Surfing Event, the largest of its kind in South Africa, is held annually in Buffels Bay, at the beginning of August, in memory of Ross Taylor.
Ross was a local surfer who died of cancer in 2010. His last wish was that a surf contest be held in his memory and that all proceeds go to Hospice, the facility that cared for him during the last days of his debilitating illness.
The event has grown from a mere 70 entries in its first year, 2009, to well over 200 entries six years later, making it the largest entered Surf Competition in South Africa, with disciplines ranging from Stand Up Paddle, Knee-boarding, Longboarding to Surfing, and divisions including Development, Novice, Advanced, Teens, Open, Ballies and Ladies.
The 3-day event also includes a Benefit Bash with local bands and entertainers, SUP flat water race, kids’ sand-castle building, fun walks and various demonstrations!
All proceeds from the event is donated to Knysna Hospice, with the event raising over R300,000 between 2009 and 2013.
The Surfer Kids NON-Profit brought a group of 15 children to the event this year. The younger children take part in the Development Surfing Divisions while the older teenagers, those who have progressed to surfing proper waves, compete in the main event’s teenage divisions.
The Surfer Kids Coordinators are also responsible for running the Development Divisions and in 2014 there were a total of 40 children who entered the Development Divisions!
Considering the integral part our Programme Coordinators play in this event, and how well The Surfer Kids’ philosophy aligns with Ross’ philosophy, “in the spirit of fun and love through giving”, it seems fitting that event organisers have covered The Surfer Kids‘ expenses at the Ross Taylor over the past three years, sponsoring all our food and camp-site fees at the Ross Taylor in 2012 and 2013!
We’re incredibly grateful for their support! Over the past three years they’ve made it possible to give our kids an awesome weekend, every year, at the Ross Taylor in Buffels Bay!
This year however, event organisers went one step further and reserved a beach house for The Surfer Kids NON-Profit! This made catering and supervising our group of 15 children (and teenagers) that much easier!
Cooking and catering for 15 children in a wet and windy camp-site isn’t easy! We’ve had to deal with some pretty rough conditions camping at past Ross Taylor events. So this new arrangement made our spirits soar!
This contributed a great deal toward further engaging us in the event, making it possible for us to give even more energy in return!
We’re incredibly grateful for this opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of so many people through having fun!
And we’re already looking forward to next year’s event!
Yours in surfing, love and life.
